El asesinato de Osama Bin Laden
El 1º de mayo, sorpresivamente, Barak Obama anunció por televisión que un grupo comando, desembarcando desde helicópteros, había matado a Bin Laden en Pakistán, junto a varios de sus colaboradores y una de sus esposas. Fue una ejecución extrajudicial, sin que fuera informado siquiera su aliado, el gobierno de Pakistán. Un repudiable asesinato.

Fue una ejecución extrajudicial, sin que fuera informado siquiera su aliado, el gobierno de Pakistán. Un repudiable asesinato.
El cadáver de Bin Laden habría sido arrojado al mar, para evitar que una tumba pudiera transformarse en santuario. “Se ha hecho justicia”, dijo Obama cantando victoria, aludiendo a las 3.000 víctimas del ataque de Al Qaeda a las Torres Gemelas de Nueva York el 11 de setiembre de 2001. Obviamente, no dijo una palabra respecto de los centenares de miles de asesinados en Irak y Afganistán por la ocupación norteamericana y de sus aliados de la OTAN. ¿Quién juzgará a Bush, a los generales yanquis y al propio Obama por haber ordenado ataques aéreos y con misiles a Afganistán y Pakistán, matando a miles de civiles inocentes y destruyendo poblados completos? Todo en nombre de la “guerra contra el terrorismo”, y de vez en cuando “pidiendo disculpas”.
El imperialismo yanqui se ha ganado el justo odio de la mayor parte de la población mundial por sus ataques genocidas y también por el saqueo de las riquezas naturales, alimentos y la explotación de los trabajadores, condenando al hambre y desocupación a centenares de millones de personas.
El presidente Barak Obama ha intentado una “lavada de cara”, ha proclamado “el cambio”, y hasta le han dado el “premio Nóbel de la paz”, aunque una de sus primeras medidas fue seguir la invasión de Afganistán y mantener Guantánamo. Predica un discurso algo distinto al de Bush, pero los hechos ya mostraron que este presidente continúa la política imperialista de saqueo, amenaza y agresión militar a los pueblos oprimidos que se rebelan. Los bombardeos a Libia, el aumento de tropas en Afganistán, los bombardeos a Paquistán y la expansión del gasto militar yanqui así lo demuestran. En nombre del “combate contra Al Qaeda”, Estados Unidos y sus aliados han devastado Irak y Afganistán.
El operativo comando que habría matado a Bin Laden fue una acción criminal que repudiamos, independientemente de las acciones que haya protagonizado el líder de Al Qaeda. Se hizo violando la soberanía pakistaní y asesinando a varias personas. La información detalla que tenían órdenes de capturarlo “vivo o muerto”. Es decir, que los comandos yanquis pueden matar a cualquiera en Pakistán (lo que ya están haciendo hace tiempo), u otros países, sin dar cuenta a nadie.
Los verdaderos responsables del 11-S
Nuestra organización internacional, la Unidad Internacional de los Trabajadores – Cuarta Internacional (www.uit-ci.org) decía cuando cayeron las Torres: “Aunque podemos comprender el porqué de los atentados, no compartimos este tipo de acciones terroristas y lamentamos las miles de muertes inocentes que ellas han provocado. No compartimos esas acciones porque causan confusión entre las masas, en primer lugar de los trabajadores y el pueblo estadounidense, que no logran identificar el verdadero rol criminal de su gobierno imperialista. Por eso los atentados no favorecen a la causa de los pueblos oprimidos que luchan por acabar con el imperialismo y sus políticas agresivas y hambreadotas. […] los verdaderos responsables de lo que ha ocurrido es la política imperial de los gobiernos de Estados Unidos y de sus aliados de la Unión Europea.” (Correspondencia Internacional Nº 16, set.-dic. 2001)
El propio Bin Laden comenzó su “carrera” de combatiente afgano financiado por la CIA. Los propios yanquis le dieron armas y entrenamiento para luchar contra la Unión Soviética en la década del 80.
Por ese motivo y por lo que sucedió después (invasión a Afganistán e Irak) es que muchos analistas dicen que fue la propia CIA o un sector de esa organización, la que abrió las puertas a Bin Laden y los suyos para atacar y destruir las Torres Gemelas o, incluso, que fue un autoatentado. El hecho de que durante 10 años “no encontraron” a Bin Laden, y ahora lo hayan matado, en vez de capturarlo vivo, no puede sino aumentar estas sospechas. Probablemente pase mucho tiempo hasta que se pueda establecer la verdad.
Es evidente que la caída de las Torres fue utilizada por Bush para justificar ante su propio pueblo y ante buena parte de la población del mundo la supuesta “necesidad” de “combatir al terrorismo”. Con esa excusa, invadió Afganistán e Irak, para intentar apuntalar su dominio mundial y del petróleo.
La amenaza para el imperialismo es la movilización de los pueblos árabes y del mundo
Un Obama eufórico dijo: “EE.UU. puede hacer lo que se proponga”. Que nadie se lo crea. La realidad es totalmente opuesta. Los dictadores y reyezuelos proimperialistas árabes se tambalean (o ya cayeron como Mubarak y Ben Alí) ante la rebelión de los pueblos. En Irak, los yanquis, ya derrotados, están encerrados en sus fortalezas. Y en Afganistán gran parte del país está bajo el control de la resistencia. En Pakistán la resistencia popular incendió el mismo día en que los yanquis mataron a Ben Laden, 13 camiones de la OTAN con suministros bélicos a utilizar en el vecino Afganistán. Esta enorme rebelión no tiene nada que ver con Bin Laden o Al Qaeda.
El periodista inglés Robert Fisk lo expresa bien al decir que el hecho de “que Bin Laden esté vivo o muerto carece de importancia. Todo esto genera una sensación de victoria en EE UU, una buena foto, pero no creo que signifique nada. En los últimos meses hemos asistido a un despertar árabe en el que millones de musulmanes árabes han derribado a sus propias direcciones… lo que ocurre ahora en el mundo, lo que importa es el levantamiento masivo y el despertar de millones de árabes musulmanes que quieren echar a sus dictadores”. Entre los pueblos oprimidos y los luchadores democráticos del mundo no se festejará el asesinato de Bin Laden. Hay que redoblar la lucha contra el imperialismo capitalista y la solidaridad con los pueblos árabes que se movilizan contra el hambre, las dictaduras y la presencia imperialista en su región.
The assassination of Osama bin Laden

On 1 May, on a surprise move, Barack Obama announced on TV that a U.S. commando landing from helicopters, had killed bin Laden in Pakistan along with several of his collaborators and their wives. It was an extrajudicial execution of which the government of Pakistan, an U.S ally, was not even informed about. It was in fact, a despicable murder.
Bin Laden’s body had been thrown to the sea to prevent his grave from becoming a shrine. «Justice has been done,» said Obama claiming victory, referring to the 3,000 victims of the attack by Al Qaeda on the World Trade Center in New York on 11 September 2001. Obviously, he did not say a word about the hundreds of thousands killed in Iraq and Afghanistan by the U.S. occupation and its NATO allies. Who will judge Bush, the U.S. generals and Obama himself for having ordered air and missile attacks on Afghanistan and Pakistan which have killed thousands of innocent civilians and destroyed whole towns? All these have been done in the name of the «war on terrorism,» and occasionally issuing «apologies.»
U.S. imperialism has provoked hatred against itself among most of the world population because of its genocidal attacks and its plundering of natural resources, food and worker exploitation, which have condemned hundreds of millions of people to hunger and unemployment. President Barak Obama has attempted a «face wash,» of U.S. imperialism; he proclaimed a new era of «change» and he has been given the «Nobel Peace Prize, although one of his first political moves was to continue the invasion of Afghanistan and keep Guantánamo open. And while Obama preaches in a different tune from Bush the facts have already shown that this president continues the imperialist policy of plundering, military threats and aggression against oppressed people who revolt. Plenty of evidence exists to prove this; from the bombing of Libya to the increase of troops in Afghanistan to the bombing of Pakistan and the expansion of U.S. military spending. And both the U.S. and its allies have devastated Iraq and Afghanistan in the name of «fighting al Qaeda,”. The commando operation that killed Bin Laden was a criminal act that we condemn, regardless of the actions of the leader of Al Qaeda. It was carried out in clear violation of Pakistani sovereignty and by killing several people. News reports confirm that they had orders to capture him «dead or alive.» That is, that U.S. commandos can kill anyone in Pakistan (which they have been doing for some time), or elsewhere without either informing others or being accountable to anyone.
When the towers fell, our international organization, the International Workers Unity – Fourth International (www.uit-ci.org) stated: «While we can understand the reason behind the attacks, we do not agree with such terrorist actions and we lament the loss of thousands of innocent deaths caused by it. We do not share these actions because they cause confusion among the masses, among first in line are workers and the American people, who fail to identify the true criminal role of U.S. imperialistic rule. So the attacks are not conducive to the cause of oppressed peoples who struggle to end imperialism and its aggressive economic policies that cause hunger. […] The real culprits of what has happened are the imperial policies of the governments of the United States and its European Union allies. «(See Correspondencia Internacional No. 16, Sept.-Dec. 2001).
Bin Laden himself began his military “career» as an Afghan fighter funded by the CIA. The U.S. gave him and others weapons and provided military training to fight the Soviet Union in the 80’s. For that reason and because of what happened afterwards (the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq) is that many analysts argue that it was the CIA or a section of that organization, which opened the door to Bin Laden and his men to attack and destroy the Twin towers and some even suggest that it was an inside job. And the fact that for 10 years the U.S. did not «find» Bin Laden and now the U.S. has assassinated him rather than captured him alive can only increase this suspicion. It is possible that a long time by gone by until the real truth comes out.
It is clear that the collapse of the towers was used by Bush to justify before people in the U.S and the world the alleged «necessity» of «fighting terrorism.» With that excuse, Bush invaded Afghanistan and Iraq in an attempt to try to reassert U.S. hegemonic control and its control oil.
The real threat to U.S. imperialism is the mobilization of the Arab peoples and the world
An elated Obama said: «U.S. can do what it wants to [in the world].» No one should believe it. In fact, the reality is totally opposite. The pro-imperialist Arab dictators and kings are shaking –some have already fallen like Mubarak and Ben Ali– with the rebellion of the people. In Iraq, the Americans, already defeated, are locked inside their military fortresses. And in Afghanistan, much of the country is under the control of the resistance. In Pakistan, the same day bin Laden was killed, the popular resistance set on fire 13 NATO trucks that were to be used to provide war supplies in neighboring Afghanistan. This huge rebellion has nothing to do with bin Laden or Al Qaeda. British journalist Robert Fisk puts it well when he writes that the fact «that bin Laden is alive or dead is irrelevant. All this creates a feeling of victory in the U.S., a good photo-opportunity, but it does not mean anything. In recent months we have witnessed an Arab awakening in which millions of Muslim Arabs have brought down his own governments … what happens now in the world, what matters the most is the mass uprising and the awakening of millions of Arab Muslims who want to overthrow their dictators.”(ABC MELBOURNE AFTERNOONS, 2 / 5).
Celebrations over the assassination of bin Laden will not take place among the oppressed and democratic fighters of the world. Thus, we must intensify the struggle against capitalism, imperialism and show our solidarity with the Arab people who mobilize against hunger, dictatorships and imperialist presence in their region.
